Likes of Us Reunites Lloyd Webber & Rice???

Date: 13 July 2005

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice premiered a musical at Lloyd Webber’s private Sydmonton Festival this past weekend – 40 years after they first wrote it. The Likes of Us tells the Victorian story of Dr Barnardo, who founded the UK children’s charity Barnardo’s. Though the book for the original musical has been lost, some 16 songs remain and Lloyd Webber and Rice have written a new one as well. According to the Daily Telegraph, the pair have so enjoyed working together again that they’re now considering collaborating on a new project. The Likes of Us was written when Lloyd Webber was only 16 and Rice 20, just before they were commissioned to write Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They followed that hit with Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, their last show together, which premiered 30 years ago. The Likes of Us are being recorded for a BBC Radio 2 programme and are likely to be released on CD. The cast at Sydmonton included Sally Ann Triplett and Stephen Fry, who acted as a narrator filling in for the musical’s missing dialogue.
