Albery Renamed in Coward’s Honour??? Date: 10 May 2005
And speaking of Cameron Mackintosh, he is reportedly considering a name change for the West End’s Albery Theatre, for which he takes over the lease from the Ambassadors Theatre Group later this year. The impresario may rename the 872-seat play in honour of the late British playwright Noel Coward. That would strike a nice balance. Mackintosh has already committed to creating a new West End studio space after the American composer Stephen Sondheim. The 500-seat Sondheim Theatre will form part of a new £20 million Shaftesbury Avenue complex that will also include the refurbished Gielgud and Queen’s Theatres (See News, 25 Jun 2003). Work is due to begin in Shaftesbury Avenue next year.
