Rattigan Revived Again In Praise of Love???
Date: 1 April 2005
After the success of the
David Suchet-headed production of
Man and Boy, which finishes its run at the Duchess Theatre this month, another
Terence Rattigan play is expected to be revived in the West End later this year. Like
Man and Boy, written in 1963,
In Praise of Love hails from the latter, often overlooked, part of Rattigan’s career. Written in 1973, the four-hander centres on a wife who conceals an incurable disease from her husband. In reality, the husband already knows but believes his wife does not.
Patricia Hodge, last seen on the London stage in the first 2003/4 season of
His Dark Materials at the National, is lined up to play the wife, Lydia. Rattigan’s earlier, more frequently seen plays include
The Winslow Boy, The Deep Blue Sea, Separate Tables and
The Browning Version, the last of which has also been tipped for a West End revival later this year (See
The Goss, 8 Feb 2005). The playwright died in 1977.
