Spacey Plans Philadelphia Story Extension???

Date: 21 March 2005

It’s hard keeping up with the schedule for the Old Vic’s much-anticipated revival of The Philadelphia Story. First, the play, starring artistic director Kevin Spacey, was meant to run for 12 weeks only from 7 May to 23 July 2005 (previews from 3 May). Then, there was a whisper that, owing to filming commitments, Spacey would only perform until 18 June. Then, at the same time as Spacey’s absence was confirmed last week, the booking was extended until 6 August. Now, although there’s still no official announcement, we hear that booking has now been extended until 3 September (for Old Vic supporters only at the moment), and that, all going to plan, Spacey will return to the role of CK Dexter Haven for those final four weeks, before the opening of the autumn season, in which he’s due to take to the stage again as Richard II, directed by Trevor Nunn. That combined with the piecemeal release of other casting information – still no word on the key role of journalist Mike Connor (apparently an American actor is being shipped in, pending Equity’s okay) or Spacey’s CK Dexter Haven filler – does seem rather a strange trickle of information. Nevertheless, we’re still looking forward to it with anticipation.
