RSC Unveils New Courtyard Theatre!??Date: 18 March 2005The Royal Shakespeare Company has settled on a name for the temporary 1,000-seat temporary venue it’s building ahead of its £100 million transformation of the Grade II-listed Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon (See News, 16 Dec 2004). The interim theatre, built in the courtyard of the existing 150-seat studio, The Other Place, will be called … the Courtyard Theatre. Keep it simple, we like that. Planning permission has now been granted and work will begin later this year on the Courtyard Theatre, which should be ready in time for the year-long Complete Works of Shakespeare Festival kicking off in April 2006. By 2007, when work is due to begin on redeveloping the RST into a more intimate thrust-stage auditorium, the Courtyard will become the Stratford home for the company’s main house ensemble until the opening of the new RST in 2009.
