Stewart Sets Sights on Stratford Return??? Date: 14 March 2005
Another exciting Royal Shakespeare Company-related casting morsel. Last week, we reported that Sir Ian McKellen is planning a “couple of stage plays that will open in Stratford-upon-Avon and then travel abroad in 2007” (See The Goss, 7 Mar 2005). Now, Patrick Stewart, who co-stars with McKellen in the X-Men sci-fi flicks, tells us that he too is keen to return to the RSC, where he remains an honorary associate artist and appeared regularly before he found screen fame in Star Trek. In today’s 20 Questions interview, Stewart says, “I think (RSC artistic director) Michael Boyd is a terrific chap, and of course, I look on Stratford as my theatrical home so I would hope to be knocking on that door some time soon.” Though Stewart is still unable to talk specifics about his three still-to-be-announced upcoming stage projects, he reveals that two of them will be here in the UK. Could they be the same two plays as McKellen alludes to? In any case, it seems that both men have to juggle their stage aspirations around filming commitments for X-Men 3. Whether they appear together or not, of course, we’ll be quite happy to have both classically trained actors treading the boards again at home.
