Date: 1 March 2005
As a new book is published to mark his 75th birthday (to enter our competition for SIGNED copies,

Harold Pinter has reiterated his intention to stop writing plays (See
The Goss, 16 Oct 2003). Echoing his previous comments, Pinter told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row programme, “I think I’ve written 29 play. I think it’s enough for me.” He said he’d found “other forms” to be getting on with, in particular poetry. In addition, said the ever-politicised Pinter, “I’m using a lot of energy more specifically about political states of affairs, which I think are very worrying as things stand.” Though he may not have any new works planned, Pinter’s existing plays continue to enjoy frequent revivals. A new production of his first full-length play, 1957’s
The Birthday Party, starring
Henry Goodman and
Eileen Atkins, opens this month at Birmingham Rep ahead of a short regional tour and transfer to the West End’s Duchess Theatre (See
News, 11 Feb 2005).
