Schwimmer Ditches Friends for LaBute Girls???
Date: 23 February 2005

David Schwimmer is in advanced negotiations to star in the world premiere of controversial American dramatist Neil LaBute’s new play Some Girls… (See The Goss, 24 Jan 2005), which is expected to open at the West End’s Gielgud Theatre in May after the current limited season of Don Carlos. Schwimmer will be the one and only male in a five-strong cast. In case, you’re wondering whether he’ll be abandoning his nice-guy Ross Geller image from TV’s Friends, there’s a clue in the play’s original working title: Some Girls Who I Fucked Over. Schwimmer, of course, won’t be the first Friends star to tread the boards in the West End. At the Comedy Theatre in 2003, Matthew Perry starred with Minnie Driver in a revival of, the seemingly similarly themed, Sexual Perversity in Chicago by American David Mamet, to whom the younger LaBute is often likened. The new production is presented by Out of the Blue, whose other high-profile West End successes - This Is Our Youth, Oleanna and now A Life in the Theatre - have attracted such Hollywood heavy hitters as Jake Gyllenhaal, Matt Damon, Anna Paquin, Julia Stiles, Aaron Eckhart and Joshua Jackson, the last of whom is currently appearing opposite Patrick Stewart in A Life in the Theatre. All going to plan, the run of Some Girls… will overlap with another LaBute premiere in London. LaBute’s new play about race and infidelity, This Is How It Goes, will run at the Donmar Warehouse from 31 May to 9 July 2005 (See News, 8 Nov 2004).
