Lear Loses His Crown for Real???Date: 7 February 2005During last Friday’s performance (4 Feb 2005) of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s transfer of King Lear at the West End’s Albery Theatre, a real-life tragedy struck. Whilst in the grips of his performance as the eponymous King, Corin Regrave let his crown fall and it rolled into the audience, never to be seen again. It seems one of the audience members was happy of the souvenir. But, with only one prop, it looked like the King would be crownless for his last two performances on Saturday. Luckily, the RSC’s Spanish Golden Age company – residing a short stroll away at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre – had a spare and were pleased to oblige. So for once King Lear had a happy ending.
