Broadbent or Pryce for Theatre of Blood???
Date: 31 December 2004
If casting rumours are to be trusted, there’s a lot more to look forward to with
Theatre of Blood than an evening of schlock horror. The stage adaptation of the 1973 cult film - co-produced by the National with Improbable Theatre, whose founders
Phelim McDermott and
Julian Crouch also collaborated on the multi award-winning "junk opera"
Shockheaded Peter - is due to open at the NT Cottesloe in spring 2005 and has attracted some major interest (See
News, 7 Oct 2003). Amongst the leading actors who’ve been tipped to take on the role of Edward Lionheart are
Jim Broadbent and
Jonathan Pryce. On screen, the late Vincent Price hammed it up to the hilt as the Shakespearean thesp who takes murderously poetic revenge on the drama critics who savaged him in print, while a young
Diana Rigg played his devoted daughter Edwina Lionheart.
