West End Poised for Sunday Performances???Date: 23 December 2004 Sunday performances may soon be a more regular occurrence in the West End. After extensive negotiations with the Society of London Theatre (SOLT, the marketing body for theatre owners and producers, leaders of Bectu (the union which represents the backstage, ticketing and box office staff in the West End) have this week agreed a proposal for a double-time pay package for working Sundays as well as an overall 5.5% pay rise. The proposal will now be voted on via a ballot to the union membership. Bectu general secretary Gerry Morrissey said: “We are confident it will be accepted. It will give people the chance to go to the theatre when they have more leisure time, while our members would be compensated for giving up their Sunday.” Although common practice on Broadway, Sunday performances are a rarity in the West End, where only a handful of shows - The Lion King, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Stomp - regularly hold them.
