Slater Immigrates…& Signs Up for Sweet Bird???
Date: 16 December 2004

If you’ve so far missed Hollywood star Christian Slater in the West End revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which finishes next month at the Gielgud Theatre, the good news is you may not have to miss him for long. He hopes to be back on the West End stage again in 2005 in a revival of Sweet Bird of Youth. Tennessee Williams’ 1959 play revolves around drifter Chance Wayne who, after failing to make it big in Hollywood, returns to his hometown, with a fading film star in tow. The 1962 screen version starred Paul Newman. Slater has made no secret of how much he’s enjoyed living in London over the past four months, so much so that he agreed to several extensions to what was meant to be a strictly limited season for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In an interview yesterday with the Evening Standard, the actor said he and his family were now considering making their permanent home in London or, as he put it, “it might be cool to spend the next 35 years here.” Slater’s parents were on hand last month at the launch party for this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, at which their son was nominated for Best Actor, a field he currently leads in voting for the final winner (click here to vote now).
