Producers’ Lane Tussles with Another Dreyfus???

Date: 10 December 2004

The Producers’ star Nathan Lane, who made headlines when he stepped in to replace Richard Dreyfuss as Max Bialystock in the new London production of Mel Brooks’ musical comedy, is now reportedly having problems with another Dreyfus. James Dreyfus - best known for his screen roles in Notting Hill, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and The Thin Blue Line - plays Carmen Ghia, the camp assistant of flamboyant director Roger De Bris (played by Conleth Hill) in the hit show. However, according to the Daily Mail, Broadway veteran Lane has suggested that Dreyfus’ “contribution to the show wasn’t up to scratch” and, when Dreyfus was feeling low after breaking up with his partner, Lane reprimanded him backstage and told him to “pull himself together”. The subject of Dreyfus’ recent missed performances from The Producers has also been a heated subject amongst theatregoers on the Whatsonstage.com Discussion Forum, prompting speculation that the actor may be leaving – or indeed, have already left – the show. However, one poster claiming to be Dreyfus himself refuted these suggestions. He said he has been suffering from a bout of flu and will be back on stage shortly. Currently, the theatre is reporting that he remains off the show due to illness.
