Dennehy Wins Out Over West’s Willy Loman???

It looks like we’ll almost definitely be getting Brian Dennehy’s Willy Loman next year. Unfortunately, that means we most definitely won’t be getting Timothy West’s Willy (See The Goss, 21 Sep 2004). West was due to appear next year in a production of Arthur Miller’s 1949 Pulitzer Prize winner Death of a Salesman that English Touring Theatre was hoping to bring into town after a few months on the road (See The Goss, 17 Jun 2004). Those plans were jeopardised when the producers of the 1999 Broadway revival starring Dennehy held onto the West End rights on the off-chance that the transfer, first scheduled for 2000 (See News, 7 Sep 1999), might still happen. Now that it’s hotly tipped for 2005, details of ETT’s production, even for the tour, have quietly slipped off its schedule of forthcoming projects. As for the Dennehy-led production, although Robert Falls is still expected to direct, the rest of the company will probably change, with Brits replacing Dennehy’s original American co-stars, amongst them Elizabeth Franz, who won a Best Actress Tony for her part and who is currently appearing at the National in Buried Child. The Broadway Salesman also won Tonys for Best Revival, Best Direction and Best Actor for Dennehy.
