Guys & Dolls Gets Lucky with Ewan McGregor???Date: 28 October 2004Next year’s much-anticipated West End production of Guys and Dolls may not have a venue (though it’s tipped for the Piccadilly) or exact dates yet (See News, 16 Jun 2004), but speculation over casting is already well under way. Scottish screen star Ewan McGregor is the hot favourite to play Sky Masterson. Despite being best known for films like Star Wars, Trainspotting, Rogue Trader and Shallow Grave, McGregor is an accomplished theatre actor, though he hasn’t appeared on the London stage since the 1999 production of Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs at Hampstead Theatre and in the West End. Of course, McGregor has already demonstrated his singing and dancing skills, albeit on screen, in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge, which has itself previously been tipped for a stage crossover (See The Goss, 5 Dec 2001). Directed by Donmar Warehouse artistic director Michael Grandage and co-produced by the Ambassador Theatre Group, which owns the Donmar building, Guys and Dolls will mark the first time that the theatre will mount a major musical for the West End outside its own limited 250-seat confines.
