Grandage & Jacobi Don Carlos in London??? Date: 18 October 2004
Don Carlos, Michael Grandage’s final production as associate director of Sheffield Crucible, looks set to follow him to London, where he remains artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse. Derek Jacobi - who starred in Grandage’s 2002 Sheffield staging of The Tempest, which transferred to the West End’s Old Vic - plays King Philip II of Spain, the tyrannical father of Richard Coyle’s Don Carlos, who marries his son’s lover, thus provoking a full-scale rebellion against an oppressive regime. Mike Poulton’s new adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s 1787 thriller also features Una Stubbs, Claire Price and Charlotte Randle. It’s expected to transfer to the West End soon after it finishes its Sheffield run on 6 November (See News, 19 Aug 2004).
