Theatregoers Invest in New Productions???

Anyone interested in getting their wings as theatre ‘angels’ will have an easier way of doing so in future. The Theatre Investment Fund, which has invested in over 700 productions since its foundation in 1976, has today relaunched itself as “Stage One”. Part of the new-look organisation is the “Stage One Club”, which will allow members of the public to invest in shows for as little as £300. According to Society of London Theatre (SOLT) statistics, more than 20 million people attended a theatre performance in the UK last year, with box office takings amounting to over £200 million in the West End alone. Producers and investors are the lifeblood of the commercial theatre, but as theatre is deemed a high-risk investment, it’s generally perceived that only the wealthy can invest and, until now, minimum stakes have been relatively high. For the past three years, TIF/Stage One has also awarded bursaries for up-and-coming producers, to encourage the next generation of commercial theatre.
