Young Loses Friends But Gains Transfer???Date: 27 September 2004 If you missed How to Lose Friends and Alienate People - Tim Fountain’s adaptation of British journalist Toby Young’s down-and-outspoken-in-New York memoir - at London’s Soho Theatre last spring (See News, 4 Mar 2003), you might want to start clearing some dates in your diary. The one-man show is now tipped for a West End transfer, possibly to the Arts Theatre, where Caroline O’Connor’s one-woman show Bombshells is currently booking to 23 October 2004. The dashing Jack Davenport played the diminutive and folically challenged Young during How to Lose Friends’ premiere at Soho. This time around, replacement names in the frame include Tom Hollander who, height-wise at least, comes closer to the actual Young. Previously, Fountain suggested that How to Lose Friends and Alienate People should be paired up with his other Brit hack bio-play about Young’s real-life nemesis, Julie Burchill Is Away (See The Goss, 30 Apr 2003). While that looks like a no-go, it’s likely that the hour-long monologue will form part of a double bill for its West End season.
