Hairspray Set for October 2005???
Date: 20 September 2004
It’s been talked about for the past two years (See The Goss, 12 Feb 2003), and now it looks like it may finally happen, in another year’s time. US industry bible Variety reports that Hairspray is aiming for its West End premiere come October 2005 at the Cambridge Theatre, currently home to Jerry Springer - The Opera. Based on John Waters' cult 1988 film and set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of geeky teen Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, a big heart and a big stage mother who finds celebrity on a TV dance programme. The Tony Award-winning musical was previously tipped for a spring 2003 transfer to the Victoria Palace with Dame Edna Everage (aka Australian comedian and drag artist Barry Humphries) playing Tracy's mum Edna, a role created by Harvey Fierstein on Broadway. According to Variety, the London cast will comprise largely British talent. For Edna, it tips Desmond Barrit, currently appearing at the National in both Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and David Hare’s Iraq war drama Stuff Happens.
