Singing & Writing with the Playwrights???
Date: 25 August 2004
Our second Whatsonstage.com special mention for the Festival goes to
The Singing Playwrights (See
News, 11 May 2004), aka
Tim Firth and
Willy Russell, who’ve been bringing the house down at the capacious Pleasance Grand this week. With the likes of
Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine and
Neville’s Island to their collective names, they’ve already proven themselves as top-notch writers. With this, they prove themselves to be highly gifted singer-songwriters as well, Firth in particular. If you can’t catch the show live, be sure to order their solo albums: Firth’s
Harmless Flirting and Russell’s
Hoovering the Moon. More kudos to the boys, too. This week they announced a £5,000 bursary to encourage new plays to premiere at the Fringe. Scripts will be judged by Firth, Russell and West End producer David Pugh. For more details, email
