Jerry’s Lee Lambasts Elton, Snubs Cherie???Date: 24 August 2004In addition to general musings on the effectiveness of farts to defuse post 9/11 tension, Stewart Lee has been using his return to stand-up, after an absence of three years, to have a go at fellow comedian-turned-musical director Ben Elton (We Will Rock You, Tonight’s the Night). In his act at the Smirnoff Underbelly during this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Lee concludes in an audience ‘poll’ that Elton is more hated by the British public than Osama bin Laden. However, Lee admits that, in his own experience with the multi award-winning Jerry Springer, still playing at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre, he has come to understand a bit of the corrupting influence of Elton’s “proximity to success”. Lee faced his own battle not to betray his political – and anti-war - beliefs when asked to schmooze Cherie Blair at a performance of Jerry Springer in July. After much soul searching about what exactly to say to the prime minister’s wife, he simply didn’t show. Related Content |
