Fountain’s Sex Addict Secret Outed???Date: 16 August 2004 Also in Edinburgh, Tim Fountain has run into trouble with his new show. In Sex Addict, the author-turned-performer - best known for penning the solo shows Resident Alien and Julie Burchill Is Away - invited audiences to choose who his sexual partner for the night after logging on to the Gaydar matchmaking website. When the owners of Gaydar threatened to sue over breach of confidentiality, Fountain not only abandoned the ‘live’ webchat in his show, but admitted that it was a scam, in which the prospective partners were invented and played by a stooge logging on nightly from Torquay. In a statement, the playwright explained: “Whilst I wanted to create a piece of work which looked honestly and without sentimentality at a subject area which involves millions of people, I did not wish to compromise anyone’s privacy and safety, except my own…. Aspects of the show are a creative distortion, but they are a creative distortion designed to expose the truth.”
