Dougray Scott Comes Back for Becket???Date: 6 July 2004If you relish power struggles between Church and State, this is surely a production to watch out for. Scottish screen star Dougray Scott is being lined up for a new version of Jean Anouilh’s 1959 play Becket. He’ll play the title role - previously played on stage by Laurence Olivier and in the 1964 screen version by Richard Burton - of the medieval English archbishop whose murder was ordered by his one-time friend, King Henry II. The production is being directed by John Caird and is expected to open in the West End this autumn. Scott was last seen on the London stage in the Donmar Warehouse’s 2000 premiere of To the Green Fields Beyond. He’s best known for his films such as Enigma, Mission Impossible II and This Year’s Love. For our money, the more interesting role in Becket is that of the jealous monarch, played by Anthony Quinn on Broadway and Peter O’Toole on screen. Whatsonstage.com can think of one or two fine stage favourites who’d be ideal as a 21st-century Henry. Related Content |
