McKellen Plays Fair with Critics’ Circle???Date: 27 May 2004 Critics were, for once, full of nothing but praise. They gathered for a lunch today at the Chelsea Arts Club to present the Critics Circle Award 2003 to Sir Ian McKellen. Though McKellen was nominated for the award by the Circle’s film section, it was his theatrical triumphs that he dwelled on during a speech in which he recalled memorable first night reviews dating back to his Cambridge days when he performed alongside such fellow students as Derek Jacobi. He went on to solicit advice for his upcoming pantomime debut as Widow Twankey in Aladdin at the Old Vic (See News, 22 Apr 2004). The presentation was capped off by McKellen’s cry of “Fair enough” when handed the commemorative crystal bowl inscribed with details of the honour for his “distinguished services to the arts”.
