Express Maddens Mendes with Fuddy Fault???

Date: 21 May 2004

The Daily Express newspaper caused further upset in the West End this morning, this time in the offices of Scamp Ltd, Sam Mendes’ new theatre and film production company (See News, 13 Feb 2004), whose first stage project, Fuddy Meers, opens at the West End’s Arts Theatre next week. In his Backstage column, Sheridan Morley suggests that the play’s postponement – “by at least a week” – may signal trouble for the production and/or the new company. Not so, says Scamp’s Caro Newling. True, Fuddy Meers had originally been scheduled to have its press performance last night, but, after a clash with a press day at Chichester Festival Theatre, they volunteered to move. Invitations, explaining the change, were re-sent to all critics. “We can only hope that everyone else managed to read the information that we have issued, and that that puts an end to further mis-information of this nature," Newling told Whatsonstage.com this morning. This week’s report in the Express follows last week’s four-star review for Barbara Cook, who only had her first London performance last night, having cancelled the start of her run due to ill health (See The Goss, 17 May 2004).
