Speaking of projects that West End impresario
Bill Kenwright is taking on with the subsidised Almeida Theatre, plans are progressing quickly for the stage adaptation of
Brighton Rock (See
The Goss, 18 Jun 2003). Based on Graham Greene's 1938 novel about gang warfare at the English seaside town, the musical - with a book by
Giles Havergal (who's previously adapted Greene's
Travels with My Aunt), lyrics by Black and music by John Barry – is on target to start life later this year at the Almeida, in Islington, north London, ahead of a West End transfer. (The show has previously been tipped as a replacement for Kenwright’s production of Willy Russell’s
Blood Brothers at the Phoenix Theatre, but that now appears less likely.) Almeida artistic director
Michael Attenborough has long been signed up as the show’s director so it makes sense that he should play a part in housing it, too. By the way, there’s a neat family link: Michael’s father,
Richard Attenborough, played outlaw-protagonist Pinkie in the classic 1947 film.
