Almeida’s Festen Fit for Shaftesbury Ave???Date: 28 April 2004David Eldridge's new stage version of the 1998 Danish Dogme film Festen (The Celebration), directed by Rufus Norris finishes its sell-out season at north London’s Almeida Theatre this weekend, but hopes are still alive to bring the show into town sooner rather than later (See The Goss, 26 Mar 2004). The West End’s Gielgud Theatre – currently housing the RSC’s All's Well That Ends Well and available after the two-week stint for Barbara Cook's Broadway finishes on 29 May – has been tipped as a possibility. If that comes off, that will mean two Almeida productions running simultaneously on Shaftesbury Avenue; its British premiere of The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?, starring Jonathan Pryce, re-opened at the Apollo Theatre earlier this month (See News, 2 Mar 2004). Whereas the Edward Albee four-hander was a bit more straightforward, one of the key challenges for Festen is how to keep together a 15-strong cast, which includes Johnny Lee Miller, Jane Asher and Tom Hardy.
