Abbott & Other TV Writers Take to Stage???
Date: 22 April 2004
Earlier rumours that television writer Paul Abbott (whose credits include
State of Play, Clocking Off and
Shameless) will make the crossover to theatre care of
Kevin Spacey’s Old Vic are true, though the timing was a little off (See
The Goss, 19 Apr 2004). Abbott’s play won’t feature in Spacey’s inaugural season, announced today (See Today’s
News), but at today’s press conference, the new artistic director confirmed that Abbot had indeed been commissioned by the theatre. In future, as part of the Old Vic’s encouragement of new work, the plan is to approach Abbot and others who “we think are remarkably talented” but who aren’t normally invited to write for the stage. Abbott’s work-in-progress reportedly concerns a postman who reads and steals mail.
