Whitehall Relaunched as Two New Studios??? Date: 18 March 2004
The West End’s Whitehall Theatre has sometimes been viewed as a problem venue, certainly so in recent years. Last summer, owner the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) closed the Whitehall indefinitely, laying off six staff in the process (See News, 26 Jun 2003). In the autumn, the transfer of Rat Pack Confidential seemed to signal a renewed lease of life, but the show closed in November after less than two months (See News, 30 Oct 2003). The 650-seat theatre has been dark ever since. However, Whatsonstage.com now hears that it may be reborn again later this year. Plans are underway to relaunch the Whitehall, carving it up into two smaller studio spaces, ideal for transfers from fringe venues. The reborn theatre would also boast a new name, tentatively Trafalgar Studios, in recognition of its location on the south side of Trafalgar Square.
