Is Best Better for Hedda Gabler??? Date: 22 January 2004
Talk about déjà vu. Last year we had both Kristin Scott Thomas and Eve Best playing Masha in separate productions of Chekhov’s Three Sisters. Now, it seems these two esteemed leading ladies – both nominated for Best Actress in this year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards (Click here to vote!) – could soon lock character horns again, this time over Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. While Scott Thomas has already been rumoured for a possible return to the London stage in a production directed by Michael Blakemore (See The Goss, 7 Jan 2004), who also directed her in the Chekhov, she may be pipped at the post by her awards adversary. We now hear Best is lined up to take the same title role in a West End production directed by former NT artistic director Richard Eyre. Best is currently appearing in Eugene O’Neill’s epic, Mourning Becomes Electra, which finishes its run at the NT Lyttelton at the end of this month.
