Disney Dominates with Dalmations, Tarzan & Mermaid???
Date: 2 December 2003
Mary Poppins, co-produced with Cameron Mackintosh, looms largest on Disney Theatrical Productions' horizon, but the company certainly isn't stopping there. After the success of
Beauty and the Beast, Aida and
The Lion King, Disney is busily working on several more screen-to-stage crossovers. The other two that are most advanced are adaptations of animated hits,
Tarzan and
The Little Mermaid (See
The Goss, 30 Oct 2002).
Tarzan, which could premiere on Broadway as early as spring 2005, has a score by Genesis pop star Phil Collins, book by David Henry Hwang, choreography by Meryl Tankard, with design and direction by
Bob Crowley. Now slated for 2007,
The Little Mermaid is being composed by
Alan Menken, though
Matthew Bourne and designer
Lez Brotherston withdrew from the project last year (See
The Goss, 23 Dec 2002). Other mooted Disney projects include stagifications of
101 Dalmations and
Aladdin as well as an "On the Record" revue show of Disney songs.
