ROH Celebrates £10m Donation???Date: 18 November 2003Feeling generous? You'd have to have very deep pockets to match the generosity exhibited by Anglo-South African property tycoon Donald Gordon who this weekend donated £20 million to the arts, to be split equally between the Royal Opera House and the Cardiff-based Wales Millennium Centre, which is due to open in November 2004. It's believed that Gordon's pay-out is the single biggest private donation made to the arts in this country since 1985 when the late John Paul Getty gifted £50 million to the National Gallery. The businessman, who's ranked 51st in the Sunday Times rich list and has an estimated fortune of £560 million, says he'd been only "vaguely interested" in the arts before he moved to the UK four years ago. Evidently, he's now a convert. Related Content |
