Democracy After Dinner at Wyndhams???

Date: 13 November 2003

The always-expected West End transfer of Michael Frayn's German political history lesson Democracy, starring Roger Allam and Conleth Hill, is looming closer on the horizon (See The Goss, 10 Sep 2003). Though exact dates have not yet been set, it's expected in early April 2004 at the Wyndhams Theatre, where it's preceded by another National Theatre production, Moira Buffini's Dinner, which opens there on 9 December 2003 (See News, 16 Oct 2003). Both are produced by Lee Dean and Michael Codron, who, amongst other Frayn plays, had a hit with 1998's multi award-winning Copenhagen. The new Frayn drama received critical raves when it opened in September at the NT Cottesloe, where it's been a sell-out. Ahead of the West End, Democracy will move houses at the National, opening in the new year for a straight run to 27 March 2004 at the larger NT Lyttelton (See News, 7 Oct 2003). And further ahead, both Democracy and the NT revival of Tom Stoppard's Jumpers, which transfers to the West End's Piccadilly Theatre this week, are being tipped for Broadway berths.
