Real Springer Jets in for Jerry Premiere??? Date: 4 November 2003
American trash talk show host Jerry Springer is scheduled to fly into London next week to oversee the West End premiere of the musical that's been minting it in his name. Following its extended run at the National - not to mention its nomination in this year's Evening Standard awards (See Today's News), Jerry Springer - The Opera officially opens at the West End's Cambridge Theatre next Monday 10 November 2003 (See News, 4 Jul 2003). In addition to attending the evening performance, Springer will be on hand for a morning press conference with his stage twin Michael Brandon and show creators Richard Thomas (music, book, lyrics) and Stewart Lee (book, lyrics, direction). Promising "triumph, tragedy and trailer trash as high art meets low life", Jerry Springer - The Opera is based on America's most lurid talk show and the host who has broadcast programmes such as "Pregnant by a Transsexual", "Here Come the Hookers" and "I Refuse to Wear Clothes". In the musical, Springer suffers the worst day of his life, during which he's taken from his studio to both heaven and hell, confronting some of his bizarre guests, including a Chick with a Dick and a diaper-wearing baritone, along the way. Though the real Springer is obviously the butt of one big joke in the show, he's previously endorsed it, saying he wished he'd thought of it himself.
