West End Makes Exhibition of Itself???Date: 22 October 2003Later this month, the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden will launch a new exhibition looking at how the West End has changed over he past 160 years. From just a handful of theatres, the West End expanded into the largest concentration of performing arts venues in the world. The exhibition will comprise a series of models, posters, props, films and behind-the-scenes images that show the theatres' continual battle between artistic demands, audience enjoyment and financial survival, as well as the area's conflict between showbiz glamour and seamy backstreets. Topical concerns about the disparity between the private and public sector and the need for investment in refurbishments will also be examined, coinciding with the publication on 28 October 2003 of a new report by the Theatres Trust titled Act Now: Modernising London's West End Theatres.
