Last Summer Spends Next Summer in London??? Date: 15 October 2003
If ever there was a regional production that seemed destined for a transfer, Michael Grandage's upcoming Sheffield revival of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer is it (See Today's News). Of course, given Grandage's own high profile in London (as artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse), the success of his Derek Jacobi-led Crucible Tempest (which came to London's Old Vic earlier this year) and the popularity of his Sheffield programming, more and more of his 'oop north' offerings are being tipped for 'down south' showings. Still, with West End favourites Diana Rigg and Victoria Hamilton now confirmed to star, this one seems still more custom-made than most. Suddenly Last Summer was last seen in the West End in 1999 when Rachel Weisz and Sheila Gish starred. The new production will run at Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre from 12 to 28 February 2004 before touring until 17 April 2004.
