More of Loesser with Andersen, Guys & Dolls???Date: 4 August 2003In terms of children's movie classics, Hans Christian Andersen may not be quite in the same league as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Nevertheless, it too is being lined up for the screen-to-stage musical treatment. The man of the title is, of course, the 18th-century Danish storyteller who authored such famous fairytales as "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Tin Soldier". Hollywood funnyman Danny Kaye played Andersen in the 1952 film. According to the Daily Mail, the musical - with songs by Frank Loesser and a new book by Maury Yeston - is tipped for a West End season in 2004. It's already had an American try-out in Maine. Coincidentally (or not?), the Ambassador Theatre Group, who are behind the planned production, are also hoping to revive Loesser's Guys and Dolls. That 1953 Broadway classic was famously mounted in 1982 at the National by Richard Eyre, whose award-winning production was rerun to yet more acclaim in 1997. Related Content |
