Waters Cry Baby Takes Hairspray Lead???Date: 4 August 2003And speaking of screen-to-stage adaptations, the Daily Mail also reports that another John Waters' cult hit Cry Baby will follow his Hairspray into Broadway musicaldom. Hairspray, the 1988 film set in 1960s Baltimore, proved a Tony Award-winning smash last year, and there are still hopes for a London transfer (See The Goss, 12 Feb 2003). In the meantime, work is under way to bring Cry Baby to the stage within the next two to four years. The 1990 film starred Johnny Depp as a poor but handsome outcast who was able to make rich debutantes fall in love with him by weeping. The score for the musical will be an original one but in keeping with the rockabilly sounds of the story's 1950s setting. Related Content |
