Beautiful & Golden Brighten up West End???Date: 24 June 2003 Two new musicals - Beautiful and Damned, the world premiere musical about the romance of Zelda and F Scott Fitzgerald, and the revamp of the 1960s Sammy Davis vehicle, Golden Boy (based on the Clifford Odets play) - are being closely watched for possible transfers. Both are now having try-outs on the outskirts of London (the former opened last week at Guildford, the latter opened last night at Greenwich) and both have serious West End ambitions. However, both may suffer from a casting spanner in the works. Beautiful and Damned stars John Barrowman (along with Helen Anker), while Golden Boy stars Sally Ann Triplett (opposite Jason Pennycooke); the pair of whom are now committed to the West End transfer of NT musical Anything Goes, which opens at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 7 October 2003, following previews from 25 September (See News, 6 May 2003). To read about Golden Boy's 65-year journey from stage play to 21st-century musical, see our current Feature of the Week.
