Jake, Jake, Where Art Thou Jake Gyllenhaal??? Date: 6 June 2003
Hollywood young gun Jake Gyllenhaal - who wowed audiences, critics and award judges in his stage debut last year in Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth - is considering a return to the West End. According to today's edition of the Daily Mail, the actor is in talks with Laurence Boswell, who directed him in Youth, about taking on Romeo in a new production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Since his season treading the boards at the Garrick last spring, Gyllenhaal has become hotter than ever in Hollywood, thanks to recent films like Donnie Darko, Lovely and Amazing, Moonlight Mile and The Good Girl, with Jennifer Aniston. For his performance as the hapless Warren in This Is Our Youth, the actor won both the Evening Standard and the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers' Choice awards for Newcomer of the Year. Gyllenhaal and his original West End co-stars Hayden Christensen and Anna Paquin were succeeded by other Hollywood hot shots such as Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Kieran Culkin, Colin Hanks, Freddie Prinze Jr and Chris Klein. The comedy closed in the West End this past March but preparations are under way to take it on a UK tour. Though no names have yet been announced, given the production's history, casting is sure to be of interest.
