Bat Boy Sucks Up to London Premiere??? Date: 30 May 2003
If Simply Heavenly does have its eye on The Venue, it may have some competition (See The Goss, 28 May 2003). Various cultish musicals have been circling the trendy, 250-seat underground space that was specially created to house Boy George's ode to 1980s London clubland, Taboo. The Brit musical is now heading for New York, while, one possibility to replace it at The Venue - award-winning Off-Broadway pop musical Bat Boy - could wing its way across the Atlantic in the opposite direction. At one point, it looked like the quirky hit would have its UK premiere at Leeds' West Yorkshire Playhouse (See The Goss, 29 Nov 2001). Set in small town West Virginia, Bat Boy - with a story and book by Brian Flemming, and music and lyrics by Lawrence O'Keefe - is a tabloid tale brought to life. It tells the story of a half-boy, half-bat who takes up with a veterinarian's family while struggling with his self-image and thirst for blood. Songs include "Apology to a Cow", "Ugly Boy" and "More Blood". Originally seen in Los Angeles, the cult show opened at Off-Broadway's Union Square Theatre in March. In New York, the show was hit hard in the weeks after 11 September, when performances were put on hold for nearly a month prior to an eventual closure in December 2001.
