Poppins Sets Deadline for Fair Lady Crossover??? Date: 23 May 2003
Meanwhile, another National Theatre hit is considering a transatlantic hop. Impresario Cameron Mackintosh announced at the beginning of the month that My Fair Lady would close at the West End's Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 30 August 2003 - making way for a third NT monster-musical, Anything Goes (See News, 6 May 2003) - ahead of possible revivals Down Under and on Broadway. Also speaking in today's New York Times, Mackintosh confirms his Broadway hopes for the Lerner and Loewe classic, though he cautions that, "unless I get it to New York by next spring, I can't do it." After that, he'll be too tied up with his stage adaptation of Disney film musical Mary Poppins, which is on target to open in West End in late 2004 with a proposed Broadway transfer in 2005 (See The Goss, 9 May 2003). Another possible hitch to a New York stint for My Fair Lady is Mackintosh's wish to keep Brits in some roles since, he insists, "it is an essentially English production and it must retain that". For that Anglo-casting determination, he's previously fallen foul of American Equity, the actors' union, who blocked for years his transfer of Trevor Nunn's mounting of Oklahoma!, yet another NT musical.
