Turning the Bend at the Roundhouse???

Nostalgia nuts and the just plain curious will have their final chance next week to see The Roundhouse in its current incarnation. Diggers move in at the start of June 2003 to begin the £25 million redevelopment of the Grade II-listed building (originally built in 1846 to repair steam engines) into a permanent Creative Centre for young people (See News, 26 Oct 2001). The new complex will house state-of-the-art facilities for television, radio, music and new media as well as theatre and circus arts. In the 1960s, the Roundhouse became a popular venue for pop concerts but fell into disuse in the late 20th century. In more recent years, it has been reclaimed as an innovative theatrical performance space and has hosted shows such as Oh What a Lovely War!, De La Guarda, Stomp! and Michael Moore Live. A series of commemorative talks and tours will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday (27 & 28 May), with various celebrity supporters expected to take part.
