Paige Tapped for Gypsy & Paddington???

Date: 16 April 2003

Speaking of Peter Hall devotees, West End diva Elaine Paige is in demand. In addition to the contingent lobbying for her to star in the anticipated West End transfer of Sam Mendes' revival of Gypsy (currently in previews on Broadway, where it opens on 1 May 2003 with Bernadette Peters), the creative team of a new musical comedy called Meet Me at Paddington is vying for Paige's attention. The piece was showcased last year at London's Bridewell Theatre and is aiming for a longer try-out in October 2003 and a major run in 2004/5, possibly at The Venue, currently home to Boy George's pre-Broadway Taboo. Written by Mike Hume, the modern love story is fashioned around London's train stations with other songs, in addition to the title number, including "Victoria", "She's My Waterloo and "Make It Too Liverpool Street". Whatever future projects she chooses, in the meantime, Paige is flexing her non-musical muscles by starring in Peter Hall's revival of Feydeau farce Where There's a Will, which launches a two-month tour this month ahead of an expected West End transfer this summer (See The Goss, 5 Mar 2003).
