But What About Billy... Elliot, That Is???Date: 12 February 2003The much-anticipated musical stage adaptation of Billy Elliot has previously been linked with impresario Sally Greene and Old Vic Productions (See The Goss, 30 Oct & 14 Jan 2002). The Old Vic CEO now says she'll produce it independently instead, in association with Working Title Films, and will premiere it in 2004 at another West End venue. The prinicipal creatives remain director Stephen Daldry and scriptwriter Lee Hall, the theatre veterans who were behind the multi award-winning 2000 film, while the original music will come care of Elton John. Set during the strikes of the early 1980s, Billy Elliot tells the story of an 11-year-old miner's son who stumbles out of the boxing ring and onto the ballet floor. The key will be in the casting of the title role, which requires an adolescent who's an accomplished singer and ballet dancer. Original screen Billy Jamie Bell has been ruled out as he's now too old and too tall for the part. Related Content |
