Has Chicago Opened the Movie Musical Floodgates???Date: 21 January 2003 The triple Golden Globe-winning Hollywood release of Chicago - starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellwegger and Richard Gere - may be the first in a line of stage-to-screen musicals. As reported last week (See The Goss, 14 Jan 2003), Andrew Lloyd Webber is so confident of the new movie musical craze that he's forked out a cool million to buy back the rights to his 1986 blockbuster The Phantom of the Opera and speed up its production schedule. And the impresario isn't stopping there. Next up? Sunset Boulevard apparently, with Liza Minelli tipped as Norma Desmond frontrunner over the likes of Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Glenn Close, who's previously played the ageing silent film star on stage. Broadway's Rob Marshall, who directed the big screen Chicago to critical acclaim, is also keen to return to the film format and has expressed interest in adapting various Stephen Sondheim, not least Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd and Follies.
