Is Caprice Miming in Rent???
Date: 16 December 2002
Caprice may be making her musical theatre debut in the West End return of
Rent, but she's got theatregoer tongues wagging as much for what she's allegedly
not doing as for what she is doing. Many who've seen the production at the Prince of Wales theatre have either written to Whatsonstage.com or posted on the
Discussion Forum suggesting that the American model is not singing live in the show. It's not the first time that the miming finger has been pointed, of course. Pop stars are often accused of the practice while, earlier this year, Liza Minnelli was apparently guilty of it during her high-profile Royal Albert Hall engagement and numerous West End musicals are rumoured to use enhanced recordings. But in Caprice's case, some theatregoers have said it's far too blatant and, according to the
StageStar website, one of
Rent's producers admitted that a backing track of the star's voice was made when "it became apparent that she wouldn't be able to cut it". However, a spokeswoman for Caprice and the production denied the miming. "I can confirm that she's been singing live on stage every night," she told Whatsonstage.com.
