Play Without Words Returns to South Bank??? Date: 11 December 2002
Play Without Words - twice nominated in our 2003 Theatregoers' Choice Awards - is likely to return to the National Theatre, where it premiered this past summer as part of the NT's Transformation season in the reconfigured Lyttelton. Speaking exclusively to the Whatsonstage.com Group last night as part of our special December Group Outing, creator, choreographer and director Matthew Bourne said he'd feared initially that the production might be seen as "part of the old regime" (under NT artistic director Trevor Nunn, who leaves at the end of March) but was pleased to find Nunn's successor Nicholas Hytner is apparently keen to repeat Play Without Words as part of the National's repertory in late 2003. Bourne also brought the group up to date on two other projects he's been connected with in the past. His adaptation of Tim Burton's film noir Edward Scissorhands is still on the cards but is awaiting a producer to finance it. The piece was originally due to premiere mid-2002 with Bourne's old company Adventures in Motion Pictures (AMP) but stalled when he and AMP partner and producer Katharine Dore parted ways. Meanwhile, Bourne's commission with Disney to create a stage version of animated film The Little Mermaid is also trundling along but in "development hell" as is often the way with corporate entities. He estimated it would be at least another two years until Mermaid made it to solid ground.
