Springer Auditions Bring New Breed to NT???Date: 9 December 2002 Today marks another first for the National Theatre - the first-ever open audition for one of its production. Jerry Springer - The Opera (See News, 4 Dec 2002) holds try-outs today at the West End's Duke of York's Theatre. An advert for performers "who have a brilliant voice and want to perform at the National Theatre" was published in the current edition of The Stage. So that won't get much response. The organisers evidently don't think so. Hopefuls are advised to "be prepared to stay all day" though they can "only guarantee to see the first 250 applicants". As the production is still in development, it's not even certain how big the cast will be although, in its last incarnation at this year's Edinburgh festival, the company was 20-strong. Rehearsals for the April premiere at the National, where it'll be the first production in the opening season of incoming artistic director Nicholas Hytner, start in February 2003.
