Russell Beale Jumps into Jumpers for Hytner??? Date: 6 December 2002
More tantalising titbits are being leaked about incoming artistic director Nicholas Hytner's opening gambits next year at the National Theatre. In addition to the already confirmed premieres of Jerry Springer - The Opera (See News, 4 Dec 2002) and Nicholas Wright's stage adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy (See The Goss, 4 Dec 2002) as well as the casting of Adrian Lester as a black Henry V (See The Goss, 18 Jul 2002), it looks likely that the multi award-winning Simon Russell Beale will be lured back to the South Bank under Hytner's reign. According to today's Daily Mail, after he accompanies Sam Mendes' swansong Donmar double of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night for a one-month New York transfer, Russell Beale will hightail it back to London to star as the moral philosophy professor in the National's revival of Tom Stoppard's 1972 play Jumpers, to be directed by former Donmar associate David Leveaux.
